News from The Standard

  • Do you have insurance policies to protect your car?
  • Do you have insurance policies to protect your home?
  • Do you have insurance policies to protect your family?
  • Then, why don’t you have an insurance policy to protect your income?

As teachers, we need our own Disability Insurance in case our sick leave runs out.  Do you have the American Fidelity Disability Plan? Would you like to switch to the Standard Disability Plan, the only plan endorsed by CTA, but you forgot to last year when we had our Disability Open Enrollment Plan?  There is a limited time opportunity to switch your coverage to the CTA-endorsed plans.  From October 1 through November 30, 2011, you can switch your Disability and/or Life Insurance coverage to the CTA-endorsed plans offered by Standard Insurance Company WITHOUT qualifying – no health questions or medical exam required.  This opportunity is only for those people who currently have disability or life insurance with another company.  To begin the process; call The Standard’s dedicated CTA Customer Service Department at 800.522.0406 (TTY) 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

Need more information on Disability Insurance?

Newly hired  in your district?

If you’re a newly hired CTA member in our district, now’s the time to get coverage. During your first 120 days of new employment, you have a special opportunity to apply for Disability Insurance and/or up to $200,000 of Life Insurance. Don’t miss this opportunity - call The Standard’s dedicated CTA Customer Service Department at 800.522.0406 for more information or apply online at www.cta.org/thestandard.

Coverage of the Manteca Rally

Join us for "An Evening With Diane Ravitch" on Friday, January 20th, 2012.  She will be appearing at the Sacramento Convention Center to speak to 5,000 teachers, parents, educators, school board members, community association members, politicos, etc. about the importance of education policy in the United States.   Diane Ravitch is the author of The Death and Life of the Great American School System.  Diane Ravitch has waived her usual speaking fee, so we're able to see tickets to her talk for only $5 each.  Contact us for tickets.   Click the flyer below for more information.

Focus on the Contract
As per the contract, Section XVI transfers, Article d., page 39.  "If a unit member is transferred/reassigned after the beginning of the school year, the unit member will be offered two days of instruction free time to prepare for the new assignment.  When a change of classroom or site is required, a unit member rather than taking release time, may, with the approval of the district, receive hourly compensation on a non-work day to affect the move.  One additional day shall be offered if the transfer/reassignment includes a change of classroom or school site.  If requested, the district shall provide assistance in moving teaching materials.”

Just Say No!
As you know, the Diastat or rectal gel legislation passed the legislature. Just remember...
1.    The school district must ask for volunteers to administer the medication to students through e-mail only.
2.
Only physicians or physician assistants are allowed to train school employees.
3.
The legislation does not provide any protection from liability in case something goes wrong during the administration of the medication.

4.     According to Ed Code 49423.5, anyone volunteering to administer diastat or perform any medical procedure, must also be trained in both CPR and First Aid.

Issues in Education
I'm sure you've heard all of the education critics who talk of the need to reform education.  You might not have heard that, despite dwindling resources, California educators and students are making great strides.
John Mockler, former executive director of the state Board of Education and author of Prop 98, the state’s minimum school funding law, recently reported that California schools are doing a lot better than most of us are being told. He says "They are not categorically failing, are not deeply flawed, and that anyone who claims otherwise is peddling drivel."
No matter what anyone tells you, you're doing a great job.  And the facts bear it out.  Don't take our word for it.  Click here to read the enlightening and positive Mockler Report for yourself.
